- Follower
- Someone following a writer's profile on Substack. Not an email subscriber.
- Subscriber
- Someone who gets the newsletter by email, free or paid. Substack shows it rounded.
- Paid band
- Substack's range for paid subscribers: Hundreds, Thousands, Tens of thousands, Hundreds of thousands.
- Bestseller badge
- Substack's orange check at 100, 1,000 or 10,000 paid subscribers. A floor when no band shows.
- Bestsellers
- A category board ranked by paid subscribers. Top 100.
- Rising
- A category board ranked by recent paid growth. Top 100. Changes faster.
- Read
- One pass over all 66 boards. Three a day.
- Reading
- One profile visit for one writer. One a day.
- Recommendation
- A publication listing another on its Substack recommendations. Has a start date from Substack.
- New recommender
- A publication that started recommending the writer in the period, by Substack's date. "50+" means at least that many.
- Mutual
- Two publications that recommend each other.
- Main category
- Substack's pick of a writer's best board, or else their best board on my last read.
- Step
- A move into the top 25, top 10 or #1 between two reads.
- Verified
- The writer put my code in their Substack bio.
